Remember how beautiful we looked in our "NATURAL" state
Before the wigs and weaves and things that are FAKE?
Before the blond hair dye and strawberry colors
Back when sisters were "Sistah's and brothers were "Brothaz"
Before the facials and botox, and skin-lighteners and clorox
'cause if the ancestors saw us today they'd be so shocked
Before relaxers and straighteners, and so-called perms
Before Vaseline on ya scalp and curlin' iron burns
Back when we saw our beauty through African eyes
Before the colored contacts became a disguise
Before the silicone, and nose-jobs, and face-lifts
Back when we loved our image and happily faced it
Back when the melanin in our skin radiated brightly
Now it's Maybelline in the day, and Noxzema on nightly
'Cause for centuries we were made to feel like less
Seeing our features as an albatross around our necks
They took their standards of beauty and placed them above me
So when I looked in the mirror, all I saw was ugly
And all the while we walked around hating our features
Subscribin' to the lies of European teachers
But now look at them with the pink, pale skin
Gettin' Brazilian butt-lifts and lips with collagen
And damn near all of them wanna have darker skin
Tryin' to look more like their Afro-kin
Layin' in tanning beds and spendin' long days on the beach
Tryin' to look like somethin' that's outta their reach
But it just proves that their standards of beauty were wrong
And that Black was beautiful all along!
