your beauty shines like the sun
your story has yet to be told
for many have tried to explain
the endurance of your pride
as they struggle to understand
all of the courage you possess inside
you have survived many years
from the days when they called you a slave
you have shown them the meaning of life
with all of the constant sacrifices you made
you have raised someone else’s children
with barely enough time for your own
but somehow you found the strength
to provide your children a safe home
as you worked the cotton fields
you managed to keep a smile
you are the voice of inspiration
the hope for every black child
for you are the light of tomorrow
and from you our children will learn
to keep their heads held high
what they say about you is not of concern
your example will forever be seen
and last for eternity
for you are more than a mere slave
your spirit is wild and free
